Earthquakes Weekly Update: August 5, 2019

San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1) and unbeaten streak at home to 10 (8-0-2) following a 1-1 draw with Columbus Crew SC on Saturday night at Avaya Stadium. Earthquakes midfielder Magnus Eriksson scored a penalty kick, San Jose's first of the season, to give his club the lead in the first half. Crew SC forward Gyasi Zardes equalized for the road side in the second half.

San Jose is in a three-way tie for second place in the Western Conference, ultimately sitting in third place on goal differential. The Earthquakes now face a series of road matches in which they take on the Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City and LAFC in a span of 11 days.

San Jose's three-match road stretch begins this weekend in Commerce City, Colo., when they face the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Saturday's match is set for 6 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Upcoming Opponent

San Jose will face Colorado for the second time in two weeks on Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo. The Quakes prevailed 3-1 on July 29 to improve to 30-21-16 all-time against the Rapids.

Moving Up the Table

San Jose now holds an 11-7-5 record this season and sits in third place in the Western Conference with an identical record to second-place Minnesota United FC and fourth-place Seattle Sounders FC.

Standing Firm

Since April 1, the Earthquakes are 11-3-5 and have outscored opponents 38-20.

Unbeaten Run

The Earthquakes are unbeaten in their last 10 home games (8-0-2) and last five matches overall (4-0-1).

Avaya Fortress

During their unbeaten streak at home, San Jose has outscored opponents 24-6, recorded five shutouts and allowed more than one goal just once. The Earthquakes have a 10-match unbeaten streak at home for the first time since 2013 (5/18/2013 - 10/26/13).

From the Spot

San Jose were awarded their first penalty kick of the season and first since Sept. 29, 2018. Midfielder Magnus Eriksson converted the penalty, marking his fifth goal of the season and 11th of his career. Throughout his MLS career, Eriksson has scored all four penalty kicks he's taken.

Facing the East

The Quakes are now 3-3-2 against Eastern Conference this season, including a 2-0-2 record in their last four.

Hosting the Crew

San Jose now holds a record of 12-6-5 in matches played at home versus Columbus Crew SC, including an active home unbeaten streak of seven matches 3-0-4. Saturday's draw brings San Jose's record against Columbus at Avaya Stadium to 2-0-1.
