The Fire (6-10-9, 27 points) enter Saturday's contest against the Impact with nine games remaining in the 2019 regular season. The Men in Red recently climbed within six points of a playoff position after producing a decisive 1-0 away victory over the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 3. The result marked the Fire's second consecutive clean sheet and its sixth of the 2019 season. Forward Nemanja Nikoliæ scored the game-winning goal for the Fire, while midfielder Nicolás Gaitán tallied his team-leading ninth assist of the season. Gaitán's nine assists are tied for fifth in MLS this season.
Saturday's game against Montreal will mark the second and final regular season meeting between the two teams this season. The Fire previously faced the Impact at Stade Saputo on April 28, falling 1-0 after conceding a goal from midfielder Omar Browne against the run of play in the 83rd minute. Since Montreal entered MLS in 2012, the Fire has produced a 4-1-3 home record against the Canadian side in league play. The most recent meeting between the two teams at SeatGeek Stadium occurred on May 9, 2018, with the Fire taking all three points in a 1-0 win.
Heading into Saturday's match, Montreal (10-12-3, 33 points) currently sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings, and has lost its last five away matches in league play since May 11. Most recently, Montreal suffered a 6-3 away defeat to the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, Aug. 3. Prior to facing the Fire, the Impact will host Canadian side Calvary FC in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinals at Stade Saputo on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
