Olimpia is the most decorated team in Honduras, having won 31 league championships in their history, dating back to their founding in 1912. They have also won the CONCACAF Champions Cup on two occasions (1972, 1988). The Tegucigalpa-based club has started off well this season with three wins and a draw to sit atop the Liga Nacional table.
The Earthquakes faced Olimpia for the first time in 2002, in the Quakes inaugural appearance in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, earning two victories in the Round of 16 series to advance to the quarterfinals. In the first leg, played at the Orange Bowl, Richard Mulrooney scored the lone goal to give San Jose a 1-0. In the home leg, played at Sheldon Florin Community Stadium in Sacramento, the Quakes burst out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Landon Donovan, current assistant coach Ian Russell and Jeff Agoos, on their way to a 3-1 win. Current Quakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez was also a part of that squad.
The Quakes have fared well in their history in international exhibition matches, posting a record of 12-11-12 against opponents from around the world, including an 8-3-4 record in their past 15 friendlies. San Jose tied Spanish side Celta de Vigo 1-1 last year at PayPal Park in their most recent friendly.
