San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE (Monday, August 1, 2005) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have loaned defender Kevin Goldthwaite to the USL First Division's Portland Timbers for the remainder of the 2005 USL First Division season. The Quakes maintain Goldthwaite's rights and can recall him to San Jose at any point during the 2005 MLS season. Goldthwaite will be on San Jose's roster for its match against Portland in the U.S. Open Cup on August 3.

The Earthquakes selected the 22-year-old defender in the second round of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. Goldthwaite has not seen playing time in an MLS regular season game with the Quakes this year, but has started and played in seven reserve league games. The Sacramento, California native has scored two goals and registered one assist in 630 minutes of reserve league action and has been lethal on set pieces. Goldthwaite had four stellar years at Notre Dame, scoring six goals and notching 24 assists in his college career. He had a definite presence on the field, as Notre Dame allowed goals to only three opponents with Goldthwaite in the line-up in 2004. The defender was named to the All-Big East First Team his senior year and was also a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist.
