Real Salt Lake News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (Monday, August 1, 2005) - Real Salt Lake and the Salt Lake City School District today kicked off the innovative "Welcome Back to School!" incentive program by honoring students who attended the first day of school at six Salt Lake City-area institutions, including Franklin, Rose Park, Whittier, Meadowlark, Bennion and Parkview elementary schools. The RSL players who appeared today in support of the sponsored-ticket program unveiled last week were:
Player School Address
FW Jason Kreis Parkview Elementary 970 South Emery Street
MF Clint Mathis Bennion Elementary 429 South 800 East
MF Brian Kamler Meadowlark Elementary 497 North Morton Drive
DF Nelson Akwari Rose Park Elementary 1105 West 1000 North
DF Brian Dunseth Franklin Elementary 1115 West 300 South
MF Clint Mathis Bennion Elementary 429 South 800 East
Last Tuesday, SLC School District Superintendent Dr. McKell Withers and Real Salt Lake General Manager Steve Pastorino announced the joint "Welcome Back to School!" program, with several Utah-area companies, including SuperCuts, Stevens-Henager College and Dick's Sporting Goods, stepping forward in support of the ticket/attendance initiative, subsidizing the cost of the sponsored tickets for qualifying students.
"SuperCuts is excited to partner with Real Salt Lake and the Salt Lake City School District," said SuperCuts Area Supervisor Margean Hammar. "SuperCuts wants to help kids look their best when they come back to school after the summer. Performance increases when kids look and feel good about themselves. Real Salt Lake is a great asset to the sense of community here in our area, and we are happy to participate in programs like this. "
The "Welcome Back to School!" ticket/attendance program is the first step of many between the two entities, as RSL players will appear in the remaining 30 school campuses on Wednesday, August 24 in support of the program. The Sierra Mist "Dribble, Pass and Score" competition - Major League Soccer's free youth skills contest - will be installed in the physical education curricula of each school, while RSL players will make regular visits to various age groups and discuss a variety of topics throughout the fall on an education/teamwork tour.
"Education is a challenge for many young people in our community," said Stevens-Henager College President Carol Gastiger. "But with our support of the âBack to School' program, we hope that the sponsored tickets will encourage students to attend school and to achieve great results."
LENNOX LOOKING TO HEAT UP
NORTH GOAL FANS WITH scoring-related giveaways
Five Lucky Fans to Win Residential Heating/Cooling Makeover Valued at $5,000
or Private Instructional Clinics by Inaugural North-end Goalscorer
SALT LAKE CITY (Monday, August 1, 2005) - Lennox, Inc., distributors of residential and commercial heating and cooling systems and one of 37 Real Salt Lake corporate partners, will reward hundreds of lucky fans in attendance at upcoming Rice-Eccles Stadium Major League Soccer games when the first-ever goal is scored in the stadium's north end.
"The Loyalists, the Jesters, the Rogue Cavaliers Brigade and all the passionate, knowledgeable and incredible fans that have supported professional soccer in Salt Lake City deserve to be rewarded," said Brent Shafer, Lennox Salt Lake District Manager. "With such a quirky and seemingly statistically impossible trend happening between the two goals at Rice-Eccles, one being very HOT, the other being very COLD, we thought this would be a fun promotion which reflects both our business and our enjoyment of professional soccer."
During Real Salt Lake's nine regular-season and one exhibition home games, all 16 of the team's goals have been scored at the "HOT" south goal, with none finding the back of the net at the "COLD" north goal. During the team's last outing, a 3-0 win over Western Conference leaders FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake thrilled the home crowd with three goals in the game's first 30 minutes, courtesy of DF Brian Dunseth (2nd minute), FW Jordan Cila (25th) and MF Clint Mathis, whose 30th-minute blast was named the league's Sierra Mist Goal of the Week, his second such honor during the last three weeks. Amazingly, that Pioneer Day victory constituted the first time in 10 games this season that RSL attacked the south goal during the first half.
Beginning with this Saturday's 4:00 p.m. kickoff, televised live nationally on ESPN2 against expansion brethren CD Chivas USA, Lennox will look to reward the thousands of fans who traditionally sell out the north end and "heat up" that goal by randomly giving away a residential heating/cooling makeover, valued at $5,000, or five private instructional clinics conducted by the RSL player that breaks the goalscoring ice in the north end.
After the inaugural north end goal is scored, Lennox will kick five full-size soccer balls into the stands, along with 200 mini-balls. Five prize-winning balls will be distributed in the bunch as part of the promotion, which will run for each remaining RSL regular-season home game. The remaining 2005 RSL home schedule is as follows:

RSL started aggressively with the first goal coming in the 5th minute by FW Dante Washington. Chivas USA tied the game in the 15th minute with a goal from FW Milton Blanco. Just three minutes later, FW Jordan Cila scored his second goal of the season in the 18th minute to put RSL up a goal. DF Michael Lookingland notched his second goal of the season and RSL's third of the game off an assist from MF Leslie Fitzpatrick in the 29th minute. Washington tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 36th minute ending the first half 4-1.
In the second half, RSL started where they finished the first half. Cila added his second assist of the season as he fed MF Luke Kreamalmeyer who fired home RSL's fifth goal of the game in the 50th minute. MF Mike Muñoz scored the second Chivas USA goal in the 84th minute ending the game 5-2.
