San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell 3-2 against Chivas USA in their finals Reserve League match of the season on Tuesday at the club's training facility on Coleman Ave.
Longtime captain Ramiro Corrales played 90 minutes for the Earthquakes after announcing that he will retire at the end of the season before the match. The club also saw the return of Nana Attakora. The Canadian international played 64 minutes at center back in his debut following a four-month layoff while recovering from a concussion.
The Earthquakes scored first after Walter Martinez sprung Sam Garza on the wing in the 27th minute. Garza beat his man, cutting back to his right foot before firing a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Patrick McLain.
The visitors would fire back with three goals of their own, the first of which came three minutes after Garza's strike. Julio Morales found the ball in space on a counter attack, cut past his marker and chipped a hot past David Bingham with the goalkeeper off his line.
Fondy scored the next two starting with a close-range effort in the 39th minute. Donald Toia sent a ball over the top into space where Fondy shielded off his defender and then slotted his shot past Bingham inside the box. He capped his brace with the eventual game-winner at the hour mark, blasting a shot from just inside the far corner of the box past the outstretched hands of Bingham.
The Earthquakes pulled one back in the 90th minute on a corner kick from Garza. Academy player Elisama Padilla rose at the far post to head the cross into the mix where guest player Jarad Vanschaik volleyed home the game's last goal.
San Jose out-shot Chivas USA 17-9 during the match and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The hosts had several golden opportunities to find the net, including a shot from Adam Jahn in the first half that drew the post and a one-on-one with Mike Fucito in the second half, but couldn't pull even in the end.
The Earthquakes' first team returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 against the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center. Kickoff is 6 p.m. PT on ESPN, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
