Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013) - Chivas USA downed the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-2, Tuesday at Nutrilite training facility led by Matt Fondy's two-goal performance. After the Quakes opened up the score sheet on Sam Garza's score, Julio Morales equalized the match for the Red-and-White and preceded Fondy's first professional brace. San Jose cut the lead to one with a goal from Jared Vanschaik with a minute left in regulation but came up short in their comeback attempt.
The Earthquakes took the initial lead in the 27th minute when Walter Martinez fed Garza on the wing, who then beat his man before cutting back to his right to fire past Chivas USA goalkeeper Patrick McLain.
Three minutes later, Morales evened the score when he found the ball in space on a counter attack, cut past his marker and chipped his shot past David Bingham while the goalkeeper was off his line.
Chivas extended their lead to two after Fondy tallied back-to-back goals. The striker gave the Rojiblancos the lead in the 39th minute when he got on the end of a long ball over the top and shielded off his defender to beat Bingham with his shot from inside the box. Fondy again got into range in the 60th minute and unleashed a strike from just inside the far corner of the box past the outstretched hands of Bingham to push the advantage to 3-1.
The Quakes pulled one back in the 90th minute when Garza played a ball into the area off a corner kick, which Academy player Elisama Padilla headed back into the mixer to connect with guest player Vanschaik, who found the back of the net with a volley to put the score at 3-2. Despite out-shooting the Rojiblancos 17-9 in the match, San Jose would not equalize, as the result stood in favor of Chivas.
Chivas USA will be off from league competition next weekend and will return to face Real Salt Lake in their final road match of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Western Conference showdown will mark the third and final meeting of the series and will be televised beginning at 6 p.m. (PT) in English on KDOC-TV and in Spanish on KWHY S̮̼per 22. Game action can also be followed in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow us on Twitter @cdchivasusa and Facebook.com/chivasusa .
