Early Power Surge Drains RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Charleston RiverDogs could not overcome four runs by the West Virginia Power in the first three innings and dropped Monday night's contest 5-1 at Appalachian Power Park.

Elvis Escobar hit his first home run of the season for West Virginia (17-13) in the second inning. Then, the Power loaded the bases with no out in the third. They added three more runs to their total when Taylor Gushue hit an RBI single to right, Michael Suchy reached base on catcher interference, and Pablo Reyes drew a bases-loaded walk.

The RiverDogs (19-12) scored their lone run in the top of the sixth. Connor Spencer hit a one-out double and two batters later, Austin Aune drove him home with a two-out single.

West Virginia matched the run in the bottom half of the frame. With Jeff Roy aboard with one out, Cole Tucker hit a single and Roy scored from first on a throwing error by the right fielder Aune.

Luis Cedeno (3-1) picked up his first loss and was chased from the game after walking the leadoff batter in the fifth inning, his shortest start of the season. Caleb Frare allowed an unearned run in relief and Cale Coshow delivered to scoreless. Austin Coley (5-1) earned his team-high fifth win for the Power.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs conclude their four-game series in West Virginia with an early 10:35 a.m. start Tuesday. Charleston will send RHP Joey Maher (1-1, 4.50 ERA) to the mound against LHP John Sever (1-1, 3.18 ERA) for the Power. You can listen to the action on RiverDogs.com.

After Tuesday's game, Charleston returning home to The Joe for a four-game weekend series against the Greenville Drive. The four games will feature a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, Home Telecom Fireworks on Friday, the Run Forrest Run 5K on Saturday, and Boeing Employee Appreciation Day on Sunday.
