Hickory Crawdads News Release

Down 3-0 before they ever swung a bat, the Crawdads had a difficult time coming back before falling to the GreenJackets, 7-2, Monday.

After an Angel Villalona RBI single and Thomas Neal two-run home run for Augusta, Hickory found itself trailing and would never recover. The 'Dads would get as close as cutting the deficit to one run at 3-2, but the 'Jackets struck late again with a four-run sixth inning to bury Hickory for good.

After allowing the three runs in the first, Crawdads starter Duke Welker settled down to allow just one single and one walk in his next four innings of work.

By the time Welker left, Hickory (4-8, 34-48) cut the Augusta (8-3, 50-31) lead to 3-2 thanks to an Austin McClune run on a GreenJacket error in the first inning and an Andrew Walker RBI single in the fourth.

But the sixth inning treated Hickory poorly again in the series, as Augusta plated four runs on five hits to pull away for good. Highlights for the GreenJackets included an Andrew Davis two-run double with the bases loaded and a Charlie Culberson two-run single.

The outburst followed a four-run sixth inning for Augusta in game one of the series and a five-run binge in the sixth inning of game two. Hickory would never truly threaten the remainder of the game, as the 'Dads totaled two singles and a walk in their final four trips to the plate.

Despite righting his early struggles, Welker suffered the loss, dropping to 1-5 on the season. He finished allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits and a walk in five innings, while striking out three.

Augusta's Chance Corgan earned his first win of the season in his fourth start of the year, improving to 1-2. He tossed five innings and also allowed five hits and a walk, striking out five and giving up two runs (one earned).

McClune and Danny Bomback each has two hits for Hickory, which has now dropped all three series it has played since the All-Star Break.

The teams finish their five-game set Tuesday night at 7, when Crawdads RHP Brad Lincoln (4-3, 3.65 ERA) tangos with GreenJacket RHP Oliver Odle (5-4, 4.46).
