Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - June proved to be the Drive's (46-36, 6-6) best month of the 2008 season thus far. Unfortunately, the Asheville Tourists (51-31, 5-7) showed why they are the South Atlantic League's best team on the last day of the month, exploding for seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 9-3 victory.
Having not lost a start in over a month, Terumasa Matsuo (3-2) struggled in his second career outing versus the Tourists. The Japanese product lasted just 1.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on five hits and three walks.
Michael Mitchell and Everth Cabrera began the first with a single and double, respectively, before Kevin Clark plated one on a groundout. Darrin Holcomb added a sacrifice fly before Jerry Cunningham homered.
Asheville continued their torrid hitting in the second, plating four more runs on just two hits. Helder Velazquez began the scoring with a one-out home run. After issuing back-to-back walks to Beau Seabury and Mitchell, Cabrera tripled them both home. A sacrifice fly by Clark brought an early end to Matsuo's evening.
The Drive scored in each of their first two at bats, but were unable to keep pace as they plated single runs in both innings. Yamaico Navarro singled home Ryan Kalish in the first and Kristopher Negron plated Oscar Tejeda an inning later with a single of his own.
Greenville's bullpen kept the opposing offense at bay, as the duo of Jordan Craft and Ryne Lawson allowed just a pair of runs over the final 7.1 innings. But the damage had already been done. The Tourists added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single by Clark, and an RBI-double by Holcomb.
Jered Stanley continued his power surge for the Drive by belting a solo homer, his eighth in 29 games since coming to Greenville, in the bottom of the eighth. Kalish paced the Drive as he finished 3-for-4.
Entering the game with an 8.59 ERA, Robinson Fabian (1-2) scattered eight hits and a walk in 6.0 innings for the Tourists, earning his first victory of the year.
The rubber match of the three-game series between the Drive and Tourists is tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Chad Povich to the hill as Asheville counters with right-hander Bruce Billings.
Tuesday's contest will feature a post-game fireworks display. In addition the game can be viewed in the Upstate on WMYA My40. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
