
Jackets Take Series From Hickory

Hickory, NC - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 9-3) assured themselves a series victory over the Hickory Crawdads (30-40, 4-8) on Monday night with a 7-2 win. Starter Chance Corgan recorded his first win of the season and Thomas Neal gave Augusta the early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning.
Angel Villalona got the scoring started in the first inning with a one-out RBI single scoring Shane Jordan for a 1-0 lead. Neal followed with a two-out, two-run homer to put Augusta up 3-0.
Corgan (1-2) allowed two runs, one earned on five hits while working a career high five innings. Corgan also matched a season high with five strikeouts and walked just one.
Hickory got one run in the bottom of the first inning when Austin McClune scored from second base on a fielding error from Nick Noonan on a ball hit by Erik Huber.
The Crawdads pulled to within one in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single from Andrew Walker but that was as close as Hickory would get.
Augusta plated four runs in the sixth inning to open a 7-2 lead. Andrew Davis connected for a two-run double to put the GreenJackets up 5-2 then Charlie Culberson came up with a two-out, two run single to cap off the scoring.
Wilmin Rodriguez pitched three scoreless innings for Augusta allowing two hits, no walks and striking out three.
Andrew De La Garza closed the game out working a scoreless ninth allowing a walk and striking out one.
The GreenJackets finish their series against Hickory on Tuesday night with Augusta sending right-hander Oliver Odle (5-4, 4.46) to the mound. The Crawdads will counter with right-hander Brad Lincoln (4-3, 3.65). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes:
Nick Noonan had a pair of doubles in the game and leads the team with 20 doubles. It was the 10th time this season a batter for Augusta collected two doubles in a game.
Augusta has won three of the first four games in the five game series assuring themselves a series win against Hickory.
Augusta won its second straight series over Hickory, its sixth straight series and 13th overall on the season.
James Simmons had his first three hit game of the season finishing 3-for-3 with a walk.
