Early 5-0 Deficit too Much for RubberDucks
Published on June 20, 2018 under Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Hartford's Dom Nunez lined three hits and drove in a run, and Matt Pierpont posted his league-high 19th save, as the Yard Goats held off the Akron RubberDucks, 6-3, Wednesday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.
Turning Point
The Yard Goats (34-36) scored three runs in the second inning to extend their early lead to 5-0 against Dom DeMasi (5-2). A wild pitch brought in Sam Tidaback to make it 3-0, and, with two outs, back-to-back RBI hits by Mylz Jones (single) and Sam Hilliard (double) made it 5-0.
Mound Presence
DeMasi was filling a rotation spot due to the promotion of Michael Peoples to Triple-A. He worked two innings and allowed six hits and five earned runs. He allowed a pair of two-out walks and two RBI singles in the first inning, including one by Nunez to fall behind 2-0 out of the gate. After DeMasi's exit, five Akron relievers combined to give up one run on four hits over the next seven innings.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks (40-31) rallied for three runs in the fifth inning against Hartford starter Ryan Castellani (4-3). Joe sever lopped an RBI single to right, and Willi Castro chipped in a two-out, two-run single to make it 6-3. The Ducks left runners on the corner, however, and never pulled any closer. Tyler Krieger was 3-5, with a double. Sever, Castro and Andrew Calica all had two hits apiece for the Ducks.
