Dynamo Defeat New York City FC to Close Homestand
March 25, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo FC closed a two-game homestand at Shell Energy Stadium with a 1-0 triumph over New York City FC. This was Houston's second victory of the year and the team tallied its second consecutive clean sheet.
For the second straight week Dynamo took the lead after drawing a foul in the box. Houston midfielder Hector Herrera suffered a foul from NYCFC defender Tayvon Gray in the 52nd minute. The penalty was awarded following a review by video assistant referee and forward Amine Bassi converted from the spot for his second goal of the year.
Dynamo forward Corey Baird nearly doubled the score in 62nd minute after having an open look at goal. Baird's shot just clipped the corner of the far post out of play.
Forward Brooklyn Raines, who made his first MLS start, gave the Dynamo its first open look of the night in the 24th minute. Bassi intercepted a ball from the NYCFC backline at the top corner of the box. Raines, who was trailing at the center of the 18-yard box took his lone shot of the night, narrowly missing the back of the net.
Raines and Dynamo forward Nelson Quiñones earned their first start in MLS this evening. Raines is the first Homegrown player to start a game for the Dynamo this year and logged 75 minutes. The midfielder spent the bulk of last year with Houston Dynamo 2 and finished with one goal and three assists in 17 appearances for the team.
Goalkeeper Steve Clark earned his second consecutive clean sheet of the season and finished with one save. Clark also earned his 52nd clean sheet in regular season play.
The Dynamo travel to California next weekend to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, April 1 at 9:30 p.m. CT. The Houston Dash open their 2023 campaign tomorrow at Shell Energy Stadium when they host Racing Louisville FC. Additional information for both teams is available at HoustonDynamoFC.com.
