Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Dayton, OH - Shane Dyer continued his impressive start to the 2010 season, throwing another quality start at the Dayton Dragons (11-11) at Fifth Third Field on Friday night. Unfortunately for Dyer his offense couldn't muster enough support as Bowling Green left 10 men on base and went 0-9 with men in scoring position in a 6-2 loss.

Dyer's (1-2) night was essentially spoiled when the Hot Rods allowed three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Coddington reached on an error before Mark Fleury was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Alex Oliveras drove in the first run of the game with a fielder's choice to third base. On the play, Julio Cedeno tried to throw out Coddington at home but his throw was late, allowing Oliveras to reach.

That play would come back to bite the Hot Rods as the next two batters singled, driving home Fleury and Oliveras to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Dayton added a run in the fourth against Dyer. Fleury led off with a double, taking third on an infield single by Frank Pfister. After a strikeout, Efrain Contreras hit a sac fly to center field pushing the game to 4-0.

Dyer finished six innings, allowing three earned runs (four total). He surrendered eight hits but did not walk a batter, striking out two. Dyer is averaging just under six innings in each of his first five starts to the 2010 season.

While Dyer kept the Hot Rods in the game, starter Josh Ravin (1-1) and the Dayton bullpen did just enough to keep Bowling Green out of it offensively. Ravin stranded a runner at third base in the first inning, second base in the third, and at first and third in the fourth.

In the fifth, he finally ran out of luck allowing two runs without giving up a hit. He began the inning by hitting Ty Morrison, who promptly stole second base. Morrison then took third on a fly ball from Diogenes Luis, scoring a few moments later on a sacrifice fly from Dustin Biell. That's when Ravin really lost it, hitting the next two batters before walking Ryan Wiegand to load the bases. After a wild pitch brought in Chris Murrill, Ravin retired Cedeno on a long fly to right field, keeping the Dragons ahead 4-2.

From there, it was the bullpen that did the work. Blair Carson worked a 1-2-3 sixth, stranded a runner in the seventh, and then allowed two men to reach before leaving in the eighth. Closer Donnie Joseph came on to finish things out in the eighth and ninth, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

Jake Sullivan was responsible for the final two runs of the game, forcing in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. He left the game and was replaced by Matt Stabelfeld, who retired the next two batters on a sacrifice fly and a fly out to right field, allowing one run to score to make it 6-4, Dayton.
