Jacksonville, FL --- Cory Dunlap hit a game-winning homer through the rain against Blake McGinley as Jacksonville downed Carolina 3-1 in the series opener at the Baseball Grounds on Thursday night.

Dunlap connected on a 1-2 pitch from McGinley (L, 0-3), who entered to start the ninth inning after a stellar eight-inning start from Daniel Barone. McGinley faced Dunlap twice in the series at Five County Stadium two weeks ago, allowing two Dunlap singles. Thursday night, Dunlap floated a deep drive over the pulled in left fielder Vince Harrison. Chin Lung Hu opened the ninth by curling a double inside the first base bag, then was bunted to third.

Barone worked eight innings on 86 pitches, walking only one batter and permitting three singles. Jacksonville (22-19) took a 1-0 lead against Barone in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Marshall McDougall, but the Mudcats (16-25) evened the game in the sixth on Brad McCann's first Double-A home run, clearing the right-centerfield wall against reliever Brian Akin.

Twice in the game Carolina stranded the bases loaded, once in the fifth when Chase Lambin whiffed with two outs against starter Justin Orenduff, and again in the ninth when Lambin struck out against winning pitcher Luis Gonzalez (W, 1-0).

Lambin and Dante Brinkley had two hits apiece for the Mudcats, who collected 10 hits, but stranded 11 baserunners.

The game was delayed 90 minutes before the first pitch due to a rain cell moving through the Jacksonville region.

Gaby Hernandez (2-4, 4.26) starts the series' second game on Friday night against Eric Cyr (3-1, 2.54) at 7:05 PM ET.
