Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY -- Facing a full count with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brooks Badeaux ripped a tie-breaking three-run double into the left field corner to lift the Montgomery Biscuits (22-19) to a 7-4 victory over the Birmingham Barons (18-23) in the opener of a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium.
Fresh off the momentum of their first road series win of the season, the Biscuits returned home to a spirited Beach Bash Thursday crowd of 5,813 and left them roaring by the end.
Birmingham wiped out an early Biscuits 3-1 lead with a three-run sixth inning, capped off by a Thomas Collaro two-run homer off of Montgomery starter Chris Seddon.
An inning later, hustle from Biscuits reserve Patrick Breen tied the score. After entering the game for Jason Pridie in the sixth inning, Breen led off the seventh by stretching a single into a double on a line drive to right-center. Brooks Badeaux sacrificed him to third, but Reid Brignac grounded out to shortstop. With Evan Longoria at the plate, the next pitch from reliever Ryan Wing went through catcher Donny Lucy all the way to the backstop. Breen scored on the passed ball with the Biscuits' fourth run.
After Montgomery relief pitcher Richard De Los Santos (1-1) set the Barons down scorelessly for the second straight inning in the eighth, the Biscuits initiated their game-winning rally.
Corwin Malone (0-1) quickly recorded two outs, but gave up an infield single to eighth-place batter Josh Arhart and walked ninth-place batter Josh Asanovich. Chris Nowak pinch-hit for Breen and worked a second straight free pass to load the bases for Badeaux. The Biscuits' switch-hitting leftfielder took five pitches from Malone, the first three for balls and the next two for strikes, before drilling the sixth delivery past third baseman Chris Kelly.
With the unusual outfield of utility man Badeaux in left, normal rightfielder Shaun Cumberland in center and normal first baseman Nowak in right, Dale Thayer coolly nailed down a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save.
Seddon lasted six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three, to earn a no-decision.
His counterpart, Kris Honel, gave up three runs on three hits and six walks in his 4 2/3 innings, with Cumberland supplying the biggest blow with a two-run homer in the fourth, his second roundtripper of the season.
In the victory, two Biscuits extended streaks. Longoria collected a base hit in four at-bats to increase his consecutive on-base streak to 34 straight games. Pridie notched a single in three at-bats to increase his hitting streak to 14 games.
On Friday, the Barons and Biscuits play the second game of the five-game tilt at 7:05 p.m. It's Superhero Night at Riverwalk Stadium with a MAX Fireworks Spectacular following the game. The pitching matchup sees Montgomery southpaw Mike Prochaska (1-3, 5.30) pitting against Birmingham righthander Adam Russell (3-3, 3.53).
