Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
Game 1
The Blue Jays opened up the second half with T.J. Zeuch on the mound looking to keep things rolling for the first half North Division champions. He pitched a clean 1st inning with two strikeouts, but things turned sideways for him in the 2nd. He gave up two runs, and the tarpons added two more runs in the third to take the lead to 4-0 in the 3rd inning. Bad weather loomed around the stadium all through the first five innings, but it seemed to hold off. The Blue Jays added a run in the 4th and had a chance with the bases loaded to shrink the lead even further, but a strikeout by Jesus Navarro ended the inning. The Tarpons would put runners on the corners with two outs in the 5th, but the rain finally came down and suspended the game until Tuesday.
Emerson Jimenez would get the finally out of the inning when the play resumed on Tuesday. The bottom of the inning began the comeback for Dunedin as they got production from Alejandro Kirk and some heads up base running by Cal Stevenson to bring the lead to 4-3. The pitching would hold steady for the next two and a half innings as either team recorded just two hits. Cal Stevenson came on in the 8th inning with a runner on first and drove a ball of the wall in right field to score Jesus Navarro and bring the game to 4-4. Extra innings were in the cards for game one as Justin Dillon did not give up a run in his five innings of work.
In the bottom of the 10th inning with the runner on second, Kacy Clemens declined to bunt and finished the game with one swing of the bat as he hit a bomb to right field to walk off the game and give Dunedin their first win of the second half.
Game 2
The excitement of game one looked to travel over into game two as the team was going for their longest win streak of the year at five games. Maximo Castillo was excellent in the start giving up just two hits in five quick innings putting himself in line for the win. The Blue Jays had scored in the first inning off aChavez Young sacrifice fly that barely left the infield, as Cal Stevenson made a heads up play to catch the defense sleeping. After four innings, it looked as though the one run may be the only run to cross the plate in the game, but there was far more action to come.
Dunedin sent seven batters to the plate in the 5th leading to a three run inning and putting the team up 4-0 with the help of Samad Taylor's triple to right-center field, Jesus Navarro's double, and a Cal Stevenson single over the second baseman. After game one with the Blue Jays coming back from a 4-0 deficit, it was certain this lead may not be safe either.
Connor Law struck out the side in the 6th, and Kyle Weatherly was poised to finish the Tarpons in the 7thinning of the shortened game. A wild inning began with two walks and a single to load the bases for the Tarpons. A single to cut the lead to 4-1 prompted a pitching change to bring in Brad Wilson to finish things off. He struck out the first batter he faced, but a double right over the glove of Demi Orimoloyewould take the score to 4-3 with runners on second and third and one out. A single to the next batter would tie the game at 4, but another strikeout for Tampa seemed the game would be tied heading into the bottom of the frame.
A high pop fly right in front of home plate seemed to be what the team needed to get out of the inning, but it fell into no man's land close to home plate to score both runs and give the Tarpons a 6-4 lead. The Blue Jays would not go down quietly as a sacrifice fly from Samad Taylor scored Demi Orimoloye from third. Cal Stevenson had a hard hit ball go to third base that was misplayed, so Norberto Obeso took a chance to bring his team level. The throw from home beat him in plenty of time, and the Tarpons got revenge on their tough lose in game one.
The Blue Jays finish the series tomorrow at 6:30 against the Tarpons with Joey Murray on the mound and a chance to get their first series win in the second half.
