Dumais Closes in on Career Points Record in 4-2 Win

Jordan Dumais has set himself up for what could be a historic moment at Scotiabank Centre later this weekend after a three-point effort in Friday's 4-2 road victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs. The Blue Jackets prospect scored twice and added an assist to pull within one point of tying Brandon Benedict's franchise record of 303 career points. A record that has stood since 2003.
The Mooseheads are gearing up for a couple of exciting home games as part of a three-games-in-three-days stretch. The Herd will host Shawinigan on 90's Night Saturday at 7pm before welcoming the Cape Breton Eagles on Sunday afternoon at 3pm for Kids Day.
Dumais led the charge in Halifax's sixth consecutive victory at TD Station on Friday as he needed just 71 seconds of game action before getting on the scoreboard with a highlight tally in Saint John. The slick goal was a milestone in itself as he became the second player in Mooseheads history to reach the 300-point plateau. That gave the Herd an early 1-0 lead in their first meeting of the season against the Sea Dogs.
That was the score until a perfect cross crease pass from rookie Lou Levesque onto the tape of Brody Fournier helped to put the Mooseheads up 2-0 at the 13:01 mark of the opening period. The 20-year-old Fournier made no mistake on his ninth goal of the season as he pointed to Levesque in recognition of the pretty play.
Halifax upped the lead to 3-0 midway through the second period on a Mathieu Cataford strike that stood as another milestone moment. Dumais grabbed an assist for point number 301 while Markus Vidicek started the play to earn an assist and his 200th career point. He is just the 10th player in team history to reach that mark for his career and is five points behind Nikolaj Ehlers for ninth all-time.
The Sea Dogs were able to break the Mathis Rousseau shutout bid as the Moose took their foot off the gas a bit in the middle stanza. Nate Tivey got the home team on the board at 18:48 to cut the deficit to 3-1. After outshooting the Dogs 14-4 in the opening 20 minutes, the teams were even at nine shots apiece in the second period and Saint John had a 12-6 edge in the final frame.
Dumais made another one count on one of those six Mooseheads shots in the third period when he turned on the jets to chase down a loose puck along the boards in the neutral zone before racing in and burying a low shot for his 11th of the season and point number 302. The reigning QMJHL MVP has been on a tear since returning from Columbus and has 24 points in only nine games played this season.
Saint John picked up a goal from Pavel Simek with only eight seconds to go in regulation to make the final score look a little more respectable at 4-2.
The Mooseheads will stay the night in Saint John before heading back to Halifax later Saturday morning to prepare for their 90's Night contest versus Shawinigan at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
