Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders improve to 9-9 on the season after defeating the Moncton Wildcats 6-5 in a shootout, coming back from being down 5-2.
Aksels Ozols appeared in his eleventh game, starting his tenth of the season.
The Isles needed to hit the ice flying, and that they did. Cole Huckins scored his third of the season just 20 seconds into the game, opening the scoring. Anton Topilnyckyj added his third assist of the season.
The Wildcats responded with a goal of their own as Vincent Collard tied the game just two minutes later.
Moncton then took the lead halfway through the period as Collard doubled up. A turnover in the offensive end for the Isles led to a 2-on-0 breakaway for Collard and Preston Lounsbury.
Aksels Ozols made a timely save shortly after to keep it at a one goal game.
Then, their lead doubled. Connor Trenholm took advantage of Ozols playing aggressively and buried in the back of the cage to extend their lead to 3-1.
That's how the score would stay going into the first intermission. The Isles were outshooting Moncton 18-9 after the fame.
The second period started with a bang. Just one minute in, Collard completed the hat-trick with his eleventh of the season, putting the Wildcats up 4-1.
Less than 20 seconds later, Alexis Michaud brought Charlottetown back within two, snapping a shot through Moncton goaltender, Keegan Warren to bring them back within two.
The three goal lead was restored just three minutes later though, as Thomas Auger buried his fourth of the year, putting the Wildcats up 5-2.
Carter Bickle then came in to relieve Ozols after allowing five goals on 13 shots.
The Isles would then go on their second power play of the game. That led to MIchael Horth adding to his league leading goal total. His 16th of the year brought the Isles back within two. Ross Campbell and Giovanni Morneau each had an assist on the marker.
Bickle stopped all four shots faced in the period, helping the Isles keep the deficit at just two goals.
Charlottetown led in shots 27-17 going into the second intermission.
The Isles had all the momentum going into the third period.
It was Campbell who brought them back within one with his fourth goal of the season, and second point of the game.
Charlottetown kept pressuring the WIldcats, and eventually, Marcus Kearsey tied it. His second goal of the year beat Warren and the comeback was complete.
Collard then sent the Isles to the power play with just under a minute left in regulation with a delay of game penalty.
Despite high-level chances, the clock hit zero and the game was still tied.
The Islanders had a 4-on-3 power play for the first minute and 14 seconds of the extra frame.
Warren kept the door shut, and Moncton came back the other way. Bickle stayed strong though.
Despite many chances, a shootout was needed to determine a winner.
Michaud scored on the Isles first chance. Bickle stopped the first two shots he saw, then Miles Mueller dangled around him to score, tying the shootout at one.
Then, the captain came up. Horth beat Warren five-hole to win the game, coming back from 5-2 down.
Charlottetown outshot the WIldcats in the win 48-27, but were outhit 7-6. The Isles went 2/4 on the man-advantage while Moncton went 0/1.
The Islanders' road trip rolls into Saint John next to take on the Sea Dogs. Puck drop at TD Station is at 3 p.m. Fans can tune in at MAX 93.1FM.
