Duffy and Richard lift Tribe to 6-5 win over Tides
July 17, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Center fielder Chris Duffy and first baseman Chris Richard combined to go 4-for-8 with a double, two homers, three runs and five RBI as Indianapolis posted a 6-5 win over Norfolk Monday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians, who have won five of their last six contests, improve to 52-41 and continue to lead the International League's West Division by one game over Louisville. The Tides fall to 36-59 overall.
Duffy and Richard were major players in the Tribe's two-run first. Duffy opened the frame with a double to right center, moved to third on LF Rich Thompson's sacrifice bunt and scored on Richard's base knock to right. 2B Yurendell de Caster, who drew a one-out walk ahead of Richard, then came plateward on C Carlos Maldonado's single to left center.
Indianapolis added a run in the third when Richard blasted his team-leading 10th roundtripper of the season -- a solo shot to right center. In the fourth, Duffy whacked his first Triple-A dinger of 2006 -- a three-run blast to score 3B Mike Edwards and SS J.J. Furmaniak.
Norfolk plated runs in the second, third and fourth before closing the gap with two more scores in the eighth. LF Michael Tucker opened the eighth with a base on balls, advanced to third on PH Jacob Cruz's single to left center and came plateward on C Sandy Martinez's base knock through the right side. Cruz then moved to third on a walk and eventually scored on LF Tagg Bozied's sacrifice fly.
The Tides threatened in the ninth -- putting a runner in scoring position with just one out -- but Indians RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) slammed the door for his team-leading 11th save of the campaign.
Indianapolis RHP Marty McLeary (6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO) improved to 1-2 with the win in his 26th appearance and eighth start of the season, while Norfolk RHP Yusaku Iriki (5.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) fell to 1-6 with the loss.
Duffy wrapped up the night 2-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs and three RBI, while Richard recorded a 2-for-4 performance with one long ball and two RBI. Martinez (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and CF Lastings Milledge (2-for-5, 1 RBI) notched the only multi-hit games for the Tides.
The two teams return to Victory Field Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. RHP Ryan Vogelsong is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Evan MacLane is expected to get the nod for Norfolk.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Tuesday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
