TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the first of four meetings at Lynx Stadium. The fifth of eight games vs. the Lynx. Richmond is 3-1 vs. Ottawa in '06. Game five of an eight game road trip (Braves are 1-3). The 41st of 48 meetings vs. North Division clubs (Braves are 15-25 vs. the North) and the 17th of 24 road contests vs. North Division clubs (Richmond is 2-14). The Braves were 3-5 vs. the Lynx last season, 2-3 at Lynx Stadium. The Braves are 70-68 all-time vs. Ottawa.. The Braves are fourth in the South, 24 games behind first place Charlotte. Ottawa is tied for fourth in the North, 7.5 games off the pace.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Syracuse SkyChiefs beat the Braves 23-11 Sunday at Alliance Bank Stadium. The SkyChiefs bashed six home runs and 25 hits to take three of games in the series. The 23 runs scored by Syracuse and their 25 hits are International League season highs. The SkyChiefs jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead, a rally highlighted by a two run double from John Hattig. The Braves scored three times in the third. Martin Prado doubled a run home and the Braves produced two runs with ground outs. Richmond tied the game at five in the fourth. James Jurries drilled a home run and Prado tied the game with an RBI single. The Chiefs blew the game open with seven runs in the home half. Six of the seven runs scored on home runs. Ryan Roberts cracked a solo shot to put the Chiefs in front to stay. Jason Phillips crushed a three run homer. Rob Cosby smacked a two run blast. Luis Figueroa homered in the seventh to give Syracuse a 13-5 lead. The Braves scored twice more in the eighth on RBI singles by Tony Pena and Cesar Crespo. Syracuse piled on 10 more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Roberts hit his second home run of the game, a three run shot, and Cosby tripled two home as Syracuse sent 16 men to the plate. The Braves scored four more in the ninth, three on Jurries second home run of the game. Davis Romero, the only pitcher in the game for either club to not allow a run, picked up the win. Matt Wright, making his Triple-A debut, took the loss. Prado had four hits for Richmond. Four other Braves had three. Roberts and Phillips each knocked in five runs for Syracuse.
AN OFFENSIVE EPIC: Richmond allowed more than 20 runs in a game for the first time since surrendering 22 vs. Durham July 9, 1999. The 23 runs allowed by the Braves last night is the most since at least the 1983 season (day by day records are available through 1984. The total of 34 runs is also the most in a Braves game since at least 1983. The 11 runs scored by the Braves equals their second largest total of the season. Richmond has scored in double figures four times this season. The Braves 21 hits yesterday is a season high. The Braves eight extra-base hits yesterday is also a season high.
STREAKERS: Jamal Strong has hits in nine straight games (13-34 .382). James Jurries has hits in four straight games (6-17 .353). Gregor Blanco has six hits in his last 10 at bats. RHP Manny Acosta has earned a save in each of the Braves last three wins. He has four saves in July, tied for the IL lead for the month. He has seven saves since joining the Braves from Double-A Mississippi and has converted his last four save opportunities. The Braves have allowed a first inning run in four straight games.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Richmond's four wins when trailing after eight innings leads the International League. The Braves have been caught stealing just 23 times, fewest in the IL. Richmond is second in extra inning games played with 14 (already more than in all of 2005 when the Braves played 11 extra-inning games), two behind Rochester with 16. The Braves are 4-10 in extra innings. The Braves are third in the league in fielding percentage. The six steals the Braves had May 16 vs. Columbus equals an International League season high. The Braves 17 inning game with Pawtucket June 18 is the longest in the IL this season.
