Rochester Red Wings News Release

Jason Phillips drove in two runs to pace the Syracuse SkyChiefs to a 5-4 win over the Red Wings at Frontier Field Monday night. Tommy Watkins drove in three runs for the first place Red Wings, who remained two and a half games ahead of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Red Wings starter Matt Ford allowed an unearned run in the first inning, after the first two Syracuse batters reached on an error and a single. Ford (1-1) fanned the next two hitters before Phillips drilled an RBI single to put the SkyChiefs ahead 1-0. Syracuse added a run in the third; Ryan Roberts hit a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 4-0 and Ford was replaced by Henry Bonilla.

Former Red Wing Josh Towers, who started the season pitching in the Toronto rotation, made his sixth appearance against Rochester since signing with the Blue Jays in 2003. Towers (3-2) brought a 1-1 record and 27 hits allowed in 25 2/3 innings against the Wings into the contest, and pitched three scoreless innings. But in the fourth inning, Erubiel Durazo hit a one-out single. Towers struck out Kevin West, Garrett Jones singled and Alex Romero was hit by a pitch. That set the stage for Watkins, who worked the count to 3-2 before pounding a line drive double into the left field corner. All three baserunners scored and the Wings were back in the game at 4-3.

The SkyChiefs came right back in the top of fifth. Phillips hit a double to right field to drive in John Hattig making the score 5-3.

Durazo led off the sixth with a double followed by a single from Jones. With runners on first and third, Romero grounded into the shortstop for an RBI fielder's choice to close the gap to 5-4.

Beau Kemp pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Wings. Lee Gronkiewicz pitched the ninth and recorded his 11th save.
