Ducks Sends Barnstormers To Second Straight Loss

September 3, 2021 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

For the second consecutive game, the Lancaster Barnstormers offense was kept silent.

Three Long Island right-handers stymied the Barnstormers on three hits over eight innings as the Ducks defeated the 'Stormers, 9-1, in the opener of a four-game Labor Day Weekend series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip.

Lancaster was able to remain in a first place tie with Southern Maryland in the North. Both clubs are two games ahead of York in the division race.

The Ducks had a completely opposite night at the plate from the one against Nile Ball (2-4) three weeks prior. That night, Ball allowed 15 baserunners in seven innings. Only two scored. This Friday, Long Island's offense wasted very little.

In the bottom of the second, Chris Shaw drilled a double to left center with one out and advanced to third on a deep fly out by Deibinson Romero. Hector Sanchez got the first run home with a single up the middle, and Daniel Fields followed with a two-run homer down the right field line for a 3-0 lead.

Ball retired the next seven before Sanchez opened the fifth with a single to right. Following a walk to Ty Kelly, the only one allowed by Ball on the night, Vladimir Frias torched a tripled into the right field corner for a 5-0 advantage.

One more scored in the Long Island seventh, and the Ducks polished it off with three in the eighth.

Scott Harkin (4-0) checked Lancaster on two hits over the first five innings. Tanner Wilt and Dylan Peiffer combined for three scoreless innings before Caleb Gindl produced the first Barnstormers run in 16 innings with a leadoff homer to right in the ninth off lefty Clint Freeman.

Tommy Shirley (3-3) will square off against right-hander Anderson DeLeon (4-3) on Saturday night. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube channel, beginning at 6:30.

NOTES: Alejandro De Aza went 3-for-4 and is 15-for-34 in his last 10 games...The Barnstormers had scored 36 runs in the four games prior to the last two...Alexis Rivero made his debut for Lancaster and allowed the seventh inning run on a wild pitch.
