Rockers Win 4th Straight With Extra Inning Victory At WV

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The High Point Rockers scored three times in the top of the 10th inning to win their fourth straight game with a 12-9 extra inning victory over West Virginia at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. The victory leaves the Rockers with a three-game lead on first place in the Atlantic League's South Division ahead of West Virginia.
The Rockers used an RBI single by Michael Martinez and a sac fly by Quincy Latimore as well as a ground ball by Johnny Field that resulted in a West Virginia error to score their three runs in the 10th. Joe Johnson came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the 10th and retired the Power in order to earn the save.
Kyle Halbohn (1-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth inning for the Rockers.
Stephen Cardullo led the Rockers with three hits while Giovanny Alfonzo had three RBI and Mike Gulino drove in two.
West Virginia's Jimmy Paredes hit a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the first as the Power took a 1-0 lead.
High Point and West Virginia traded seven-run outbursts in the third inning. The Rockers scored seven times in the top of the third for a 7-1 lead. Jared Mitchell led off with a double and Johnny Field walked to put runners on first and second before Quincy Latimore singled to load the bases. With Jerry Downs at the plate, West Virginia pitcher Max Povse balked, bringing Mitchell into score and moving the other runners up a base. Downs then grounded to second and the throw to the plate was not in time to get Field as the Rockers went ahead 2-1. Stephen Cardullo's single to center scored Latimore for a 3-1 High Point advantage. James McOwen followed with a single that scored Downs from second as High Point went ahead 4-1. Giovanny Alfonzo then followed with his second home run of the year, a three-run shot to put the Rockers up 7-1.
West Virginia rebounded in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs of its own to regain the lead at 8-7. Miles Williams hit a three-run homer and Paredes and Edwin Espinal each delivered two-run singles to highlight the inning for the Power. The Rockers committed a pair of errors in the inning as well.
Williams added a solo homer in the fifth to push West Virginia's lead to 9-7.
High Point tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the seventh when Mike Gulino singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs.
Kyle Halbohn came on in the bottom of the ninth for the Rockers and threw a scoreless inning. In the top of the 10th, with Gulino starting the inning at second, Jared Mitchell walked and Field lined a ball to third that Albert Callaspo could not handle cleanly, allowing Gulino to score. Michael Matinez followed with a single to right that brought Mitchell in and Quincy Latimore scored Field on a sac fly.
Joe Johnson pitched the 10th for the Rockers to earn his first save of the year.
High Point and West Virginia continue their three-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park.
