(York, Pa.) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the York Revolution 7-5 at PeoplesBank Park on Thursday night in the finale and rubber game of a three-game midweek series in the Keystone State.
Long Island took a 1-0 lead versus York starting pitcher Joey Lara in the top half of the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hector Sanchez that scored Deibinson Romero after he reached base earlier in the frame with his tenth double of the season on a line drive that glanced off the glove of Darian Sandford in left centerfield. The Flock flexed their muscles in the third as they went back-to-back and belly-to belly with Daniel Fields launching a two-run home run over the Arch Nemesis in left followed by L.J. Mazzilli cracking a solo tater to left center as the visitors took a 4-0 advantage.
York got to within 4-2 against Ducks starter Darin Downs one half inning later thanks to a run-scoring double from Welington Dotel and an RBI base knock off the bat of Lenin Rodriguez. Long Island made it 5-2 in their favor in the fifth on heads-up baserunning by Vladimir Frias as he hustled from first to third on a single to right from Steve Lombardozzi and scurried home on a fielding error by third baseman Carlos Franco on the throw from outfielder James Harris. The Revs batted around in the last of the fifth and scored three times to give the contest its final score of 7-5 with the big blow coming off the bat of JC Encarnacion who belted a pinch-hit go-ahead two-run home run to straightaway centerfield off losing pitcher Clint Freeman (1-3), who allowed three runs on two hits (one home run) in one-third of an inning along with two walks given up. Jim Fuller closed the game out for his league-best 21st save, making a winner out of Luis Sanchez (1-0), who tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one.
Both starters tallied a no-decision, with Downs allowing four runs on six hits (one home run) in three and two-thirds innings pitched, walking a season-high seven and striking out three. Lara surrendered five runs (three earned) on seven hits (two home runs) in four innings on the mound, walking two and striking out one. Lombardozzi led the way at the plate for the Ducks with a pair of hits.
Long Island returns home on Friday, September 3, to begin a four-game Labor Day Weekend wraparound series with the Lancaster Barnstormers. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
