Dubuque Snaps Skid, Drops Stampede 5-3

November 24, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

New lines and a stiff penalty kill allowed the Dubuque Fighting Saints to roll to a 5-3 victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede on Saturday night. Dubuque snapped a four game losing streak on the back of a two goal effort from Riese Gaber. Aaron Randazzo got the start in net and secured his fourth win of the season.

-The Fighting Saints tried two new line pairings and they generated a lot of offense. Verners Egle was paired with the Jackson twins and the line produced a goal and the best forecheck of any Fighting Saints line all night. The best shift for them occurred late in the game when they possessed the puck for nearly a minute and a half of zone time.

-The other new line of Riese Gaber, Bram Scheerer and Logan Pietila was just as dynamic. Gaber tallied twice on assists from Pietila and the line created chances off the rush all night. Both lines that remained the same also looked good for the Fighting Saints.

-The compete level for Dubuque was up all game. The Fighting Saints won loose puck battles, threw the body around and even got after the Stampede late in the game when things started to get out of hand. It was one of the better played games for Dubuque in terms of tenacity all season long.

-Artem Ivanyazhenkov snapped his seven game goalless drought with a deflection to open the scoring. The power forward sent the teddy bears raining down from the stands on teddy bear toss night. The Stampede would tally again in the first period but were held off the scoreboard after that until 18 seconds left in the game.

-Aaron Randazzo made every save he needed two and a few spectacular stops for the Fighting Saints en route to his fourth win of the season. Randazzo has been a great compliment to Thiessen this year as the two have split time over the last month.

-Dubuque was great on the penalty kill all night stopped all six chances for the Stampede. Sioux Falls was stymied by a Dubuque unit that had struggled this season. Coming in to the game the Fighting Saints were operating at just about 73%, but the effort on Saturday night was far better than that.

-Sioux Falls fell to 2-5 in their last seven games. The Fighting Saints dealt them just their second loss at home all season long.

-Willie Knierim, Matias Maccelli and James Sanchez all tallied points in the game, giving them all at least a point in seven straight games for the Fighting Saints. It was one of the quieter nights for the trio, but they still found a way to score a pretty goal late.

-Dubuque will have a full week without a game before playing Green Bay on Saturday for Teddy Bear Toss Night at Mystique Community Ice Center.
