Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA-Three power play goals, and a three-point night for Seamus Malone, helped the Dubuque Fighting Saints move into 2nd Place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. With the win, Dubuque is now at 77 points, one point ahead of Cedar Rapids in the Eastern Conference standings heading into the final game of the regular season tomorrow night in Waterloo. With Cedar Rapids loss and Dubuque's win tonight, the Fighting Saints can finish no lower than 3rd Place in the standings, guaranteeing them a matchup with Cedar Rapids to open the playoffs next week.
The Fighting Saints scored first on defenseman Keegan Ford's second goal of the season on the power play at 16:05 of the first period. Ford collected the puck at the left point and snapped a wrist shot towards the goal. The puck deflected off the arm of a Tri-City defenseman and redirected up and over Tri-City goaltender Alec Dillon's blocker to make it 1-0 Dubuque.
Ford would factor in again in the second period to double Dubuque's lead. The defenseman snapped a shot from the right point that Dillon stopped with his left pad. The puck sat loose in the crease where forward Seamus Malone tracked it down. He poked the rebound past Dillon for his 25th goal of the season at 10:24.
The Storm would cut Dubuque's lead to 2-1 on a power play goal of their own from the USHL's leading goal scorer. Chris Wilkie's wrist shot overpowered Jacob Nehama with just 1:02 let in the second period. The goal was Wilkie's 35th tally of the season and beat Nehama over the catching glove.
In the third period, the power play would come up key again. Jacob Benson scored his 14th goal of the season on the man advantage at 7:40 to give Dubuque a 3-1 lead. Malone assisted on the play, maneuvering the puck behind the goal before centering to Benson. The forward shoveled a shot over Dillon's blocker to add insurance for Dubuque.
In a desperate comeback attempt, the Storm would pull Dillon with over four minutes to play. Dubuque would capitalize with an empty net goal from Malone. Nathan Sucese won a race to the puck to negate icing and fed Malone in the slot for his second goal of the game with 2:36 to play.
Nehama collected his 29th win of the season by stopping 22 shots. Dubuque and Tri-City split the season series, with each team winning one game. Dubuque was 3-for-3 on the power play.
Tomorrow Dubuque finishes the regular season in Waterloo with a 7:05 p.m. game. A victory, or a point in the standings, would guarantee Dubuque a 2nd Place finish in the Eastern Conference. Seeding, game dates and times are not yet determined. Following tomorrow's game, finalized information about playoff dates and times, as well as ticket information, will be released on DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
