Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (23-25-11) gave the Muskegon Lumberjacks (35-20-4) a third-period scare, cutting a 5-1 score down to 5-4, but the Jacks recovered in time to skate off with a 6-4 win on Friday at the Alliant Energy Center.
The night marked a look into the future for Madison, as affiliate goaltender Ryan Edquist got his first USHL start. The University of Minnesota commit and recent Minnesota high school champion with Lakeville North was not greeted fondly by the Lumberjacks.
Despite being outshot 20-5, the Jacks were able to make the most out of their shooting opportunities. First, it was defenseman Joe Cecconi who fired a quick snapper past Edquist through traffic at 4:24 to make it 1-0 Muskegon.
Madison had chances at the other end against Muskegon goaltender Eric Schierhorn, but the Gopher commit was stellar, stopping all 20 Madison shots in the first period, including a sliding post-to-post stop on Guillaume Leclerc. Madison failed to connect on the lone power play of the opening period.
The Lumberjacks were not done on the score sheet, though, as Corey Schueneman jumped into a rush on the right side and ripped a wrist shot past Edquist at 17:53 to make it 2-0. It was the blueliner's 16th goal of the year.
Muskegon quickly awoke after the five-shot first period to extend the lead early in the second. First, it was the ex-Bloomington Thunder forward Ryan Siroky who extended the lead to 3-0. At 4:21, Siroky located a rebound near Edquist's net off a Christian Wolanin shot to pop home his 14th goal of the season.
After Madison had done a good job staying out of the penalty box, the Lumberjacks finally got their first power play late in the second, and their leading scorer made the Capitols pay. Griffen Molino took a feed on the left wing side and blasted a slap shot laser past Edquist on the glove side to put Muskegon up 4-0 at 16:58.
The Capitols would not go without a fight, though, as Jarod Zirbel got his team on the board at 19:20 of the middle period, locating a loose puck off a Carver Watson point shot that stunned Schierhorn in front. Madison finally cracked the Jacks' goalie on their 34th shot of the night.
Garrett Metcalf entered the net to start the final frame for Madison, but the Lumberjacks kept up the offensive firepower from their blue line, as captain Christian Wolanin blasted a slap shot past Metcalf at 1:52 to make it a 5-1 game.
Madison once again tapped into their comeback nature to mount a charge in the third period. First, Haralds Egle tallied his ninth power play goal of the year at 8:54 off a rebound shot from Tommy Muck to make it 5-2.
Next, another ex-Lumberjack, Daniel Willett, got the lead down to 5-3 at 11:45 on a one-timer off a faceoff feed from Cooper Watson.
Charlie Gerard then continued his red-hot roll with his linemates Egle and Leclerc, finishing off a three-man passing play at 15:04 to cut the lead to 5-4.
Madison's valiant effort ultimately came up just short, as Matej Paulovic scored an insurance marker for Muskegon on a power play at 18:17 to round out the scoring.
Madison and Muskegon will meet once again on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the season finale inside the Alliant Energy Center. Tickets are available via www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (608) 257-CAPS (2277), as well as visiting the Alliant Energy Center box office.
