Drive Stomp Grasshoppers, 12-5
May 18, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, both the Drive's four-game hitting streak and Reid Engel's team-high 11-game hitting streak were in jeopardy. However, with one swing of the bat, Engel extended both with a three-run homer giving Greenville (16-24) a permanent lead as they went onto a 12-5 victory.
Both starting pitchers, Greenville's Brian Steinocher and Greensboro's Tom Cowley, were on cruise control for the first four innings as neither allowed a run to score. Unfortunately for Steinocher, the top of the fifth would prove to be his downfall.
After a two-out, two-RBI triple from Chris Coglhan, the Drive went to the bullpen in favor of Jordan Craft (1-3). However, things did not bode any better for Craft as he surrendered a two-run homer to the first batter he faced, Jacob Blackwood, before recording the final out.
The Drive answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI-double by Mickey Hall, before the floodgates would open the next inning. In the sixth, the first three batters would reach for the Drive, including a two-RBI double off the bat of Lars Anderson. With two outs, Greensboro reliever Don Czyz issued a walk to Jason Place, setting up Engel's heroics on the first pitch.
Greensboro would cut the Drive's lead to a run in the top of the seventh, but that would be as close as they would come as Greenville's route continued with six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hall would collect an RBI by drawing a bases loaded walk, before Carlos Fernandez cleared the bases with a double. Kristopher Negron then added an RBI-triple, followed by an RBI-single by Manny Arambarris.
Game three of the four game series between the Drive and Grasshoppers is set for Saturday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. The Drive will turn to southpaw Dustin Richardson to continue their winning ways, as the Grasshoppers counter with right-hander Derell McCall.
