May 18, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - After falling behind 1-0 in both games of Friday's doubleheader, the Sand Gnats (12-29) battled back to win Game 1, 2-1, and Game 2, 4-1, and sweep the twin bill from the Columbus Catfish (27-15). The Gnats have now won four of their last five games. With the sweep and the Rome Braves splitting a doubleheader in Charleston, the Gnats moved into a 7th place tie with the Braves.
Savannah could muster just one hit through the first four innings of Game 1 before Sean McCraw laced his second single of the afternoon into right field. Juan Lagares followed with a two-run home run, his second of the season. It was all the offense the Gnats needed as Matt Durkin (1-2) pitched 5.0 innings and allowed just one run off four hits to earn his first win of the season. Ryan Meyers and David Koons combined for 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Meyers earned the save and is now 4-for-4 in save chances this season.
Things started off the same way in the nightcap when Ryan Royster's RBI double in the third inning put Columbus up 1-0. Columbus had the previously undefeated Josh Butler on the mound looking for his fourth win of the season. However, the Gnats rallied for four runs off five hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Once again the Gnats bullpen pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to preserve the win. This time Greg Mullens (3-1) went home with the win while Emary Frederick earned the save, his second of the year.
Saturday the Gnats go for their first four-game series win as they take on the Catfish in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It's Military Appreciation Night. All fans with a valid military I.D. will can receive a general admission ticket and meal deal, all for only $5. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Sand Gnats photo ball from Coca-Cola. For tickets and a complete schedule, call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
