Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville, NC - The woes continued for the Greenville Drive as they surrendered eight runs over the first three runs to the Asheville Tourists en route to an 8-7 loss Friday night at McCormick Field. With the loss the Drive have now dropped their last seven games, a season-high, and are now 29-31 in the second half.
The Drive jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-RBI single by Luis Soto, but would soon relinquish the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Tourists second baseman Eric Young, Jr. singled with one out and advanced to third on Chris Nelson's double. Young would then score on a single Cole Garner single. After Nelson scored on a groundout by Phillip Cuadrado, Michael Paulk doubled home Garner and Daniel Carte.
Asheville would add two more runs in the bottom of the second, extending their lead to 6-2. Nelson Robledo led off the inning by being hit by a pitch from starter Chris Jones and Dexter Fowler followed with a two-run blast to right.
The slugfest continued as the Drive plated a run in the top of the third. Tony Granadillo, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, singled with one out and scored as Aaron Bates doubled. Asheville would pull away in the bottom of the third, scoring their final two runs to take an 8-3 lead. With two outs, Robledo doubled home Paulk, and Fowler doubled home Robledo.
Greenville answered right back in the fourth for two more runs, to trail the Tourists by three runs. Yahmed Yema hit a two out single, knocking in Matt Mercurio and Dominic Ramos.
In the ninth, the Drive would come up just short as they scored two runs, losing by one for the second straight night. After Ramos walked and advanced to third on Yema's single, he scored on Granadillo's sacrifice fly. Aaron Bates then doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out. Yema then scored on Luis Soto's groundout, but Greenville left the tying run just 90 feet from home as Dustin Kelly grounded out to end the game.
The Drive and Tourists continue their four-game series Saturday night at McCormick Field with first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
The Drive return home on September first to close out the 2006 season with a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Tickets to can be purchased by calling the Drive Ticket Office at 864-240-4528 or online at www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
