SAVANNAH, Ga. - John Lannan pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats to a 7-0 win over the Rome Braves in Game 2 of a doubleheader Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,164 at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Lannan tied his season high with seven strikeouts in the full seven innings, allowing just three hits and one walk in Savannah's second complete game and sixth shutout of the year. The win was the left-hander's sixth of the season.
The Sand Gants jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first when Logan Sorensen ripped a double down the right-field line to score Francisco Plasencia who reached on a walk. Tim Pahuta and Edgardo Baez each followed with RBI singles of their own, making it a 3-0 ballgame.
Savannah pulled away in the fifth when Plasencia greeted Braves reliever Rudy Quinonez with a leadoff homer to right. The Gnats got four more hits in the inning, including a two-run triple by Pahuta.
The Sand Gnats lost Game 1 of the doubleheader, 3-1, as Bryan Lambert Jr. allowed just three hits and struck out a team-high 10 batters in 6.2 innings.
The Sand Gnats and Braves continue the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as Savannah sends left-hander Jack Spradlin to the hill to face Rome righty Jairo Cuevas. For tickets and a complete schedule, visit www.sandgnats.com, or call the Sand Gnats offices at 912-351-9150.
