Lansing, Mich.-The Lansing Lugnuts built an 8-2 lead over the first three innings and held off a huge comeback bid by the Dayton Dragons to defeat the Dragons 8-7 on Monday. The Dragons left the tying run at third base in the ninth inning in losing their sixth straight game.

Dayton's loss coupled with a 4-0 win by Fort Wayne over Great Lakes cut the Dragons lead to one game in the Midwest League Eastern Division wildcard race with 20 games to play.

Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin had serious control problems, walking seven batters over two and two-thirds innings. Ravin (2-8) allowed six hits and eight runs (six earned) as Lansing built an early lead.

But the Dragons started back in the fifth inning when Zack Cozart belted a home run after a Kevyn Feiner single to make it 8-4. Cozart's homer was his 13th of the season.

Meanwhile, Dragons reliever Mace Thurman, who failed to retire a batter while allowing four runs in his Midwest League debut on Friday night, put together a sparkling long-relief outing. Thurman went four and one-third innings and retired all 13 batters he faced with seven strikeouts. He allowed only one ball to leave the infield.

The Dragons pulled to within one run in the eighth inning. After a pair of walks and a single by Brandon Waring to load the bases, Cozart scored on a balk to make it 8-5. Michael McKennon then delivered a two-out, two-run single to make it 8-7.

In the ninth, with two outs and the bases empty, Dragons pinch hitter Jake Kahaulelio blasted a high drive high off the left-center field fence that missed by less than a foot of clearing the fence for what would have been a game-tying home run. Kahaulelio settled for a triple. But the next batter, Cozart, struck out to end the game.

The Dragons and Lugnuts close out the four-game set on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Daniel Guerrero (0-4, 10.20) will start for Dayton.
