COMSTOCK PARK - South Bend sent eight batters to the plate in the eleventh inning and scored three times on just one hit to beat the Whitecaps, 5-2. Taylor Harbin led off the eleventh with a single to left. Whitecaps reliever Scott Green - who pitched a perfect tenth inning - then walked Sean Coughlin, hit Derrick Walker with a pitch and walked Chance Wheeless on four pitches to drive in the go-ahead run. Noah Krol relieved Green and allowed an additional run on a wild pitch. The third run of the inning scored when with the infield drawn in, second baseman Justin Henry fielder a ground ball, but made a low throw home that skipped past catcher Alex Avila. West Michigan squandered a solid start by Thad Weber who allowed one run on six hits in six innings pitched. Andrew Hess tossed three innings of relief, but gave up an unearned run that tied the game, 2-2 in the seventh inning. Matt Oxendine singled with two out for South Bend in the seventh. He scored when Jo Jo Batten hit a ground ball to third that was fielded cleanly by Cory Middleton, but thrown over and past first base. The Whitecaps scored a pair of runs in the third inning on consecutive RBI hits by Ronnie Bourquin and Chris Carlson. Bryan Henry and Clay Zavada each threw two shutout innings of relief for the Silver Hawks. Billy Spottiswood pitched a perfect bottom of the 11th for his 10th save. Leadoff hitter Ollie Linton went 3-for-6 for South Bend and drove in the Silver Hawks first run on an RBI triple in the fifth inning. Carlson went 3-for-5 for the Whitecaps. Bourquin and Kyle Peter had two hits each.
