Bradford, Main combine to stifle the league's top offense

Domnit Bolivar's two-run homer and a stifling pitching performance led the Quad Cities River Bandits to a 4-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Monday night, making it three consecutive victories at Modern Woodmen Park.

After suffering their first four-game sweep in a road series at Cedar Rapids last week, Quad Cities (27-23, 60-54) is suddenly in position to be on the winning end of a four-game sweep heading into the series finale on Tuesday. Clinton (25-25, 66-51) held a 2-0 lead at one point only to watch the River Bandits score four unanswered to pull off the win.

For the second straight night, the LumberKings jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Andres James reached base with one out as shortstop Oliver Marmol dropped a blooper to shallow center. After James moved to third on a base hit by Tim Smith, Midwest League RBI-leader Mitch Moreland drove home his 81st of the year with a single to right to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.

Jonathan Greene's two-out double in the top of the third drove home a run and extended the LumberKings' edge to 2-0, but the River Bandits fought back in the bottom half of the frame. After Adron Chambers was hit by a pitch with one away, Domnit Bolivar blasted a two-run homer to left-center. Quad Cities' first hit of the game was Bolivar's fourth homer of the year, tying the score at 2-2.

The River Bandits added to the advantage over the next two innings. Marmol singled through the left side to drive in a run in the fourth, as his groundball slipped by two defenders and plated the go-ahead run. One frame later the bases were loaded when a passed ball allowed Bolivar to scamper home from third for a 4-2 lead.

Jared Bradford (2-2) and Jameson Maj (1) took care of the rest, as the two hurlers stepped in to replace Lance Lynn after the 39th overall pick in the 2008 draft had his start skipped due to a tight forearm.

Bradford made the spot start and tossed five solid frames, allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits. The 18th-round pick out of Louisiana State in the June draft struck out four and walked one while snatching the win.

Appearing for the first time in a River Bandits uniform, Maj took over in the sixth. The 22-year-old impressed in his Midwest League debut, allowing just one hit over four frames. He retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, responding to a one-out double in the sixth by setting down the last 11 batters in order. Maj added four punch-outs and struck out the side in the eighth to earn the save.

Michael Main (1-1) took the loss for Clinton after allowing more than one earned run in a game for the first time in six Midwest League starts. The 24th overall pick by the Texas Rangers in the 2007 draft, the righty struck out nine and yielded just two hits over 4.1 innings, but also walked four and hit two batters while allowing four total runs and three earned.
