Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars got out to a 6-0 lead and held off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for a 6-5 victory Monday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Larry Cobb homered and drove in three runs to pace the Cougar hitters. Carlos Hernandez got the win and is now 4-0 in four starts for the Cougars this season.
The Cougars (22-27 second half, 61-56 overall) grabbed the lead with a little situational hitting in the top of the fourth. Rattler starting pitcher Brett Lorin walked Adam Klein, the leadoff batter. Then, Michael Richard doubled to right to put runners on second and third with no outs. Todd Johnson's sacrifice fly to left-center was deep enough to drive in Klein and send Richard to third. Cobb was next and his sacrifice fly to center was deep enough to score Richard for a 2-0 lead.
Kane County got to Rattler reliever Jose Jimenez in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead out to 6-0. Klein and Richard hit back-to-back doubles to account for the first run. Johnson singled to drive in Richard. Cobb concluded the onslaught with a home run to right-center.
The Rattlers (15-35, 46-70) got to Hernandez in the bottom of the sixth. Denny Almonte drove in the first Wisconsin run of the game with a two-out double. Edilio Colina sent Almonte home with a single to make the score 6-2. But, Hernandez got the final out of the sixth and worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning before turning the game over to the Cougar bullpen. On the day, Hernandez allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Chad Kerfoot worked around a two-out single in the eighth. Then, Wisconsin made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth against Luis Espinal.
Colina doubled, his third hit of the game, to start the inning. Joe Dunigan followed with a single. Then, Alex Liddi's single drove Colina home to make the score 6-3.
Joe White drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. The Rattlers would make the score 6-4 when Alex Meneses grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and Dunigan scored on the twin killing.
Israel Nunez kept the rally going with an RBI single to send Liddi home for a 6-5 score. But, Espinal got Mendez to ground out to second to end the game.
The final game of the four game series with Kane County is Tuesday Night. Edward Paredes (6-10, 4.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Scott Deal (6-3, 4.08) is set to take the hill for the Cougars. Game time is 7:05pm.
