Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (Aug 11, 2008) - The Burlington Bees lost for just the second time in the month of August and for the first time at home in the month after falling 7-2 Monday night to Cedar Rapids. In the loss, Jason Taylor hit his 15th homerun of the season while David Lough and Nick Francis each had two hits.
The Kernels put up two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Bees starting pitcher Ray Liotta retired the first two batters he faced before he gave up a double to Hector Estrella. Julio Perez then came to the plate and hit a homerun to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead. Those were the only runs Liotta allowed as he went five innings allowing just the two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He took the loss to move to 1-1 this season.
The Bees cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Lough singled and then stole second base. Mike Moustakas then hit a two-out single to score Lough and get the Bees within one run. After two walks in the inning the Bees had the bases loaded but left all three runners on base.
Paul Raglione came into the ballgame in sixth inning for the Bees and struggled. Raglione only recorded two outs while he allowed five runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. The five-run sixth inning gave the Kernels a 7-1 lead.
The Bees tried to come back in the eighth inning. Taylor led the inning off by hitting his 15th homerun of the season. The Bees then loaded the bases once again but could not get another run to score in the frame as the Bes left all three runners on base for the second time. In the game, the Bees left 12 runners on base, which tied a season-high.
The Bees were only outhit by one, 10-9. Seven separate Bees had at least one hit with Lough and Francis each having two. Tony Bradley pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Bees. He did not allow a run while giving up two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
