Lansing hangs on for fourth straight victory

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts survived a late comeback attempt from the Dayton Dragons in Monday night's 8-7 win in front of 4,812 fans at Oldsmobile Park. Lansing has won four straight games and has taken all three from Dayton by one run.
The Lugnuts trailed 1-0 after the first half inning of play, but moved ahead in the bottom half by showing patience at the plate. After Justin Jackson and Jonathan Baksh started the innings with singles. John Tolisano and C.J. Ebarb followed that by drawing walks. Ebarb's free pass pushed Jackson home, making it 1-1. The Lugnuts would take the lead two batters later when Manny Rodriguez cleared the bases with a double into right-center field, making it a 4-1 contest.
Lansing scored another run in the second and lead 5-2 in the third before adding more runs to the scoreboard. Rodriguez and Yohermyn Chavez each walked to start the frame and Moises Sierra reached on an error to load the bases. Darin Mastroianni came up and singled into center field, plating two runs and making it a 7-2 game. Mastroianni would later come home on a Jackson groundout, pushing the lead to 8-2.
Trystan Magnuson entered the game in search of his first win this season, and came within one out of qualifying for it. However Zack Cozart's two-run homer in the fifth cut the lead to 8-4 and chased Magnuson from the game.
He tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits.
Joe Wice followed Magnuson and retired seven straight for Lansing. However reliever Mace Thurman kept Dayton in the game by retiring all 13 batters that he faced, as he stayed in the game for 4 1/3 innings.
The Dragons would load the bases in the eighth, where all of the runners scored to cut the lead to one run. Devin Mesoraco's two-run single capped the inning for Dayton.
However Lansing's Edgar Estanga shut the door in the ninth, earning the save while stranding the tying run at third base.
Wice (5-1) got the win for Lansing by tossing 2 1/3 shutout innings.
Starter Josh Ravin (2-8) suffered the loss for the Dragons. He gave up all eight runs to Lansing on just six hits. He did walk seven and did not strike out a batter.
Lansing (68-52, 29-21) will attempt to sweep Dayton (54-64, 26-24) in the series finale Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
