Dayton Dragons News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - In five of the Dayton Dragons (6-0) six games in 2007, lead off man Drew Stubbs has reached base with a hit to open the ball game for the Dragons. Four of those five hits resulted in Stubbs coming home to score the first run of the game. Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium vs. the Fort Wayne Wizards (2-4) was the fourth such occurrence, as Stubbs led off the game with a single and scored the games first run as the Dragons extended its franchise best season opening winning streak to six with a 8-1 win over Fort Wayne.

Denis Phipps drove home a pair of runs on the afternoon, Juan Francisco added two RBI as well and Chris Valaika hit his first home run of the season as the Dragons improved to 3-0 on the road. Sean Watson (WP, 1-0) was the beneficiary of the early offense as the Dayton starter was treated to two runs in the first inning, one in the third and one in the fifth. The right hander tossed 5.0 innings of five hit, two strikeout, one walk, one run baseball.

Wizards starter Nathan Culp (LP, 0-1) who was perfect through 6.0 innings in Fort Wayne's season opening win over Great Lakes lasted just 4.2 innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs. The left hander managed six strikeouts and just one walk but the Dragons chased him before the completion of the fifth inning.

Stubbs, Phipps and Chris Heisey extended their season long hitting streaks to six consecutive game (every game the Dragons have played in 2007). The Dayton bullpen was fantastic once again as Pedro Viola (1.1 innings), Ramon Geronimo (0.2 innings), Travis Webb (1.0 innings) and Marcos Mateo (1.0 innings) combined to blank the Wizards over the final four innings of the afternoon. Fort Wayne picked up just one hit over the final four inning on the afternoon.

Javis Diaz got the Wizards on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning.

Dayton and Fort Wayne wrap up the quick two game series on Monday night at 6:00 PM from Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne, Indiana. RHP Jordan Smith (0-0, 1.80 ERA) will start for the Dragons, while the Wizards give the starting nod to RHP Aaron Breit (0-1, 9.00 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 5:30 PM. The game will also be carried live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
