Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels rode the arm of David Herndon and the bat of Matt Sweeney as they evened their 2007 record at 3-3 with an 8-3 win over Wisconsin, Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Herndon (1-0) allowed three runs and seven hits over seven innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out five, walked no one and induced 11 ground ball outs from Wisconsin batters.

Sweeney extended his hitting streak to six games with a solo home run off Wisconsin starter Nathan Adcock (0-1) to right field in the third inning. He walked and scored two runs on the day.

The Kernels managed only six hits on the day, but took advantage of five Timber Rattler errors to score four unearned runs. Peter Bourjos and Ryan Mount each had two hits and Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger had 2 RBI.

Trumbo had to leave the game in the bottom of the seventh as with the bases loaded, he was hit on the wrist by a pitch. Marco Albano pinch ran for Trumbo and stayed in the game to play first base.

Barret Browning and Warner Madrigal combined for two scoreless innings of relief work.

The Kernels and Timber Rattlers wrap up the series on Monday night at 6:30 pm. It will be Mix 96.5 / WMT AM 600 Belly Buster Monday where for $7, plus the cost of a ticket, fans can enjoy all you can eat hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and popcorn during the game. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
