Burlington, IA - After knocking out 24 hits in two games against the Swing of the Quad Cities, the Kane County Cougars' offense totaled just five hits in Sunday's doubleheader against the Burlington Bees, losing, 1-0, in Game 1 and 5-1 in Game 2 at Community Field. Greg Dowling's fourth-inning homer in Game 2 was the lone highlight of the contest for the Cougars, who also got singles from Jake Smith and Mike Massaro. Starter Joe Piekarz (0-1) gave up a pair of first-inning runs and one unearned tally in the third before exiting. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out four in the loss. Burlington added two runs off Joe Newby in the fifth to provide the final scoring for the day. Matt Campbell (1-0) snagged the victory. The first contest, scheduled to last seven frames, was a great pitchers duel and took nine innings to finish, as Cougars starter James Heuser logged four innings of two-hit ball, walked two and fanned six. T.J. Franco handled the next three innings of relief before Scott Moore (0-1) eventually allowed the game-deciding tally in the bottom of the ninth and took the loss. The Bees' Tyler Chambliss (2-0) took the win, and Mike Massaro and Alex Valdez each singled to account for the Cougars' only hits. The finale of the three-game series continues Monday night at 7 CDT, as John Herrera (0-0, 0.00) will pitch for the Cougars (1-7) and square off against Harold Mozingo (0-1, 3.60) for the Bees (6-2).
