West Michigan Wins Two In A Row

SOUTH BEND, IN - Closer Brett Jensen gave up three consecutive hits to start the bottom of the ninth inning as South Bend pulled to within one, but a bases-loaded ground ball double play sealed a 5-4 win for the Whitecaps.

For the first time this season, the Whitecaps have won two consecutive games.

Jensen gave up a lead off triple to Yunesky Sanchez, followed by an RBI single from Matt Oxendine as the Silver Hawks cut the Whitecaps lead in half before an out was recorded in the ninth.

West Michigan rallied in the top of the second inning after falling behind 2-0 in the first. Jeramy Laster delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded and Gorkys Henrandez followed with a fielder's choice ground ball that drove in another run to tie the game, 2-2.

In the fifth inning, the Whitecaps took the lead on a ground out by Brennan Boesch that allowed Louis Ott to score from third.

Both centerfielders experienced trouble with the sun late in the game. Hernandez lost a ball in the bottom of the seventh inning that dropped for an RBI triple by South Bend's Matt Oxendine. In the top of the eighth, Joey Side lost a ball in the sun that fell in as an RBI double for Laster.

Josh Rainwater relived Whitecaps starting pitcher Duane Below and tossed 1.1 perfect innings. Rainwater picked up his second win of the season in relief. Below went 4.2 innings and stuck out seven.

Jensen has earned a save in all three Whitecaps victories. Casey Fien pitched two innings of relief for West Michigan to aid in the victory.

Laster finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Scott Sizemore was 4-for-5 for the Whitecaps.

Jackie Robinson Day: Whitecaps outfielder Jeramy Laster wore number 42 on Sunday to honor the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson became the first African American of the 20th century to play Major League Baseball on April 15, 2007.

"It's a great honor to wear 42," remarked Laster in pre game comments.

One player on every Major League and Minor League team was permitted to wear number 42 on Sunday as the permanent retirement of the number was lifted for one day.
