Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped the first of a two game series with the Swing of the Quad Cities by a score of 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs have now dropped five straight games and are 3-5 on the season. The Chiefs loaded the bases in the first inning following back-to-back singles by Josh Lansford and Russ Canzler but could not capitalize against Swing starter Brandon Dickson. Peoria starter Jose Ceda worked out of a jam in the second inning after allowing runners to reach first and second with one out. In the third inning, the Swing got to Ceda with two outs when a Mark Shorey double plated two runs. The Chiefs got a run back in the bottom of the third inning when Andrew Lopez connected on his first homerun of the season cutting the deficit to 2-1. Quad Cities answered in the fourth inning with a five-run inning started by Christian Lopez's RBI double that scored Daryl Jones. Ceda walked back-to-back hitters that loaded the bases for Isa Garcia who picked up an RBI single that scored Chris Grossman. Jayson Ruhlman relieved Ceda in the fifth and surrendered an RBI single to Brandon Buckman that extended the Swing lead to 7-1. The Chiefs added a pair of runs in the sixth inning after Yusuf Carter reached base and stole second base with Alfred Joseph on third but the second basemen could not handle the throw and Joseph scored from third base. Wellington Castillo picked up an RBI single to score Carter making the score 7-3 in favor of Quad Cities. After the Chiefs scored two in the bottom of the sixth Lopez picked up his second RBI of the game with a single off of Mark Pawelek in the seventh inning. Pawelek got Buckman, who leads the league in both home runs and RBI, to pop up with the bases loaded for a big second out in the inning to keep the score 9-3. Ceda takes the loss allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks over four innings. Two of the Chiefs relievers, Jason Ruhlman and Rocky Roquet pitched without allowing any runs while Pawelek walked two and hit two to give up a pair of runs.
