Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons continued their recent assault on visiting pitching with an 11-3 win over the Clinton LumberKings in the first game of a four game series Friday night at Fifth Third Field. In the Dragons last five home games, which includes being shutout by Great Lakes in one of the five, Dayton has scored 57 runs and given up 15. Friday night's game started out as a pitchers duel and a low scoring affair and turned into a one sided Dragons win as Denis Phipps hit his second grand slam since July 5th highlighting a five run seventh inning.

It took until the fourth inning, but Clinton finally broke through with the first runs of the ballgame against Daniel Guerrero (ND). Chad Tracy began the inning with a single to left, and went to second when Chris Kemp drew a two-out walk. Josh Bradbury followed with a line drive to right that Phipps lost in the sun, allowing Tracy to score the first run of the game. Another single, this time by David Paisano, scored Kemp and Clinton extended the lead to 2-0.

Dayton answered with two runs off of Broc Coffman (ND) in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Chris Heisey made a spectacular catch to end the top of the fifth, he led off the bottom of the frame by driving a ball into the Dragons Lair in left field for his seventh home run of the season. After Jason Louwsma walked, Logan Parker doubled to the gap in right center, driving in Louwsma to tie the game at 2-2. Eddy Rodriguez followed with a double of his own, but home plate umpire Antonio Gutierrez ruled that Parker was touched by third base coach and manager Donnie Scott. Contact cannot be made with a player on the bases, so Parker was ruled out. Scott argued the call to no avail, getting ejected from the game in the process. After the argument, the Dragons rally was thwarted, and the game remained tied at two.

Clinton came back with a run in the top of the seventh against Lee Tabor (WP, 4-1). Tabor hit the first two batters of the inning with a pitch, and then with two down walked Chad Tracy intentionally to load the bases. Another walk to K.C. Herren forced in a run, and the Lumber Kings led 3-2.

The Dragons blew the game open with a five run seventh inning against Josh Leuke (LP, 0-1). A walk to Parker, a single by Rodriguez, and a walk to Drew Stubbs loaded the bases with one out. Turner followed by drawing the third walk of the inning, forcing in a run and tying the game at 3-3. On the first pitch he saw in the at-bat, Phipps unloaded the bases by blasting a grand slam off the scoreboard in the left-center, giving Dayton the 7-3 lead.

Dayton put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth against Brett Zamzow (ND). After picking up a double to start the inning, Parker scored on a wild pitch. Also in the frame, Zack Cozart, Turner, and Phipps picked up RBIs.

The Dragons and LumberKings continue the four game series with game two Saturday night at Fifth Third Field beginning at 7:00 PM. The Dragons will give the starting nod to RHP Jordan Smith (7-6, 3.46 ERA) while Clinton counters with RHP Jeremiah Haar (3-0, 1.61 ERA). Saturday's game will be televised on Dragons Television Time Warner Cable Channel 25 with Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Tom Browning joining Mike Vander Wood with the call of the action. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will also carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Magazine at 6:00 PM, followed by the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM.
