Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Cody Puckett and Dave Sappelt hit solo home runs as the Dayton Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 6-3 to gain a split of a doubleheader Tuesday night in South Bend. The win also gave the Dragons their first series split of the year as they won two games in the four game set.
Dayton took the lead with three runs in the top of the second inning. Humberto Sosa walked with one out and went to second on Jose Gualdron's single to left. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and Frank Pfister blooped a hit to right to bring in Sosa and make it 1-0. Gualdron scored on a throwing error by South Bend catcher Chris Davis, and Kevin Coddington followed with a double to left to score Pfister and make it 3-0.
Puckett led off the Dayton third inning with a home run to left field, his fourth of the year. Puckett moved into a tie for the league lead in homers with the blast. The Dragons added an unearned run later in the third to increase their lead to 5-0.
Sappelt led off the fourth inning for Dayton with a long home run to left to make it 6-0. It was Sappelt's second home of the year.
South Bend did not have a hit against Dayton starting pitcher Curtis Partch over the first three innings, but they scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within three at 6-3. But Partch pitched a scoreless fifth inning before giving way to the bullpen. Scott Gaffney worked a scoreless sixth and Aguido Gonzalez notched the save with a scoreless seventh inning of the scheduled seven inning game.
Partch (1-2) earned his first win of the year. In five innings, he allowed three hits and three runs with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Dragons play at Beloit at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday to open a three-game series.

South Bend, Ind.-Jake Elmore broke a scoreless tie with a grand slam home run in the fifth inning and Trevor Harden fired a three-hit seven-inning shutout as the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.
Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin (1-2) was dominant over the first four innings. He allowed just one hit, striking out five, and did not allow a runner past first base. But in the fifth, Ravin hit the lead-off batter before allowing a base hit and a walk to load the bases with no one out. After getting a ground ball that forced the lead runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, Elmore blasted Ravin's first pitch over the left field fence to give South Bend a 4-0 lead. South Bend scored four more in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Ravin took the loss, working five-plus innings and allowing five hits and six earned runs with two walks and six strikeouts. Mace Thurman allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning out of the Dayton bullpen.
