Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - Behind 11 brilliant innings of shutout baseball by starters Chris Carpenter and Chris Archer, the Peoria Chiefs swept a doubleheader from the Cedar Rapids Kernels with 1-0 and 3-0 wins Tuesday afternoon in front of 8,179 fans at O'Brien Field. That marks the ninth highest attendance in club history, and seventh best at O'Brien Field as the Chiefs won their fourth straight.

The Chiefs got the lone run of game one in the bottom of the third. Josh Harrison lined one into right-center. It looked like Harrison was going to be held to a single, but the Chiefs second baseman hustled it into a one-out double. With Rebel Ridling batting, Kernels starter Manuel Flores tried to pick off Harrison at second, but threw the ball into center field, allowing Harrison to move to third. Ridling then delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right field, scoring Harrison to give the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage.

Carpenter picked up the win and sparkled through his six frames, with the only real threat against him coming in the top of the first. The Kernels loaded the bases, but the Chiefs right-hander induced a fly out to Nelson Perez off the bat of Gabe Jacobo to end the inning. Carpenter allowed just two hits in his six innings of work, walking three and striking out three. Erik Hamren came in for the top of the seventh to save it for Carpenter. Hamren allowed a two-out single but nothing else in picking up his fourth save of the season. Cedar Rapids starter Manuel Flores took the tough-luck loss. The left-hander hurled a complete game, allowing just one unearned run on five hits. The Chiefs also got started offensively in the third inning in game two. Junior Lake singled through the hole on the left side with one out. After a Tony Campana pop out, Harrison ripped a single down the left field line, scoring Lake easily to make it 1-0 Peoria. The throw home was cutoff, but the speedy Harrison made it to second just beating the tag of Kernels second baseman Alexi Amarista. That kept the inning alive for Rebel Ridling, who connected on a towering, two-out, two-run homer down the left field line to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The home run gave Ridling the Midwest League lead in RBIs at 18. Archer struck out a career-high eight batters in a winning effort. The right-hander, acquired from Cleveland in the off-season, went five innings and allowed just one hit. Kevin Kreier picked up a two-inning save, after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and firing a perfect seventh. Manuarys Correa also pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits.

Casey's General Store Player of the Games - Chris Carpenter (RHP) and Chris Archer (RHP)- Carpenter hasn't been scored upon in his last two starts after his terrific six inning scoreless outing in game one Tuesday.
