Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Terry Doyle pitched eight magnificent shutout innings and the Dash staved off a ninth inning Kinston rally to defeat the Indians 2-1 in front of 6,491 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night. Winston-Salem has taken the first two contests of the four-game set and goes for the series victory on Saturday night.
The game was a matchup between two of the better pitchers who were promoted from the South Atlantic League last month, as Doyle (2-2) squared off against Joe Gardner (3-1).
The Dash (36-19) cracked the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning. Gardner hit Seth Loman to start the inning and then walked the next two batters to load the bases with no outs. Jason Bour hit a line drive to right field that was caught by Abner Abreu. Loman tagged from third and scored to put Winston ahead 1-0. Drew Garcia hit into a double play to end the inning, robbing the Dash of a chance to add more.
Winston-Salem scored again in the sixth inning when Loman led off with a towering home run to right-center field. It was his league-leading 13th homer and it gave the Dash a 1-0 lead.
Winston's offense threatened several more times throughout the game, but Kinston (29-26) turned three double plays to keep the contest close.
Doyle didn't seem to mind the lack of offensive support. He stifled the K-Tribe bats to the tune of four hits and eight strikeouts over eight innings, the longest outing by a Dash starter this season.
He departed after the eighth and Kyle Bellamy came in to close out the ballgame. The side-arming righty allowed a leadoff single to Jason Kipnis before striking out the next two Indians. Lucas Montero then drilled a double to right-center, scoring Kipnis from first and cutting the Winston lead to 2-1.
With the tying run at second base, Bellamy got Doug Pickens to fly out to center to end the ballgame. Despite allowing a run in the inning, Bellamy was credited with his second save of the season.
Gardner took the loss after he allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and three hit batsmen over six innings.
Winston-Salem won for just the fourth time all season when scoring three or fewer runs and improved to 6-12 when getting out-hit by its opponent.
After losing the first two games of the series, Kinston has lost back-to-back ballgames for the first time since May 4-5. The K-Tribe's streak of eight straight series victories will end, as the best the Indians can muster is a split of the four-game set at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem's Southern Division lead remains five games over the Salem Red Sox, who beat Myrtle Beach 2-1 on Friday. The Dash's win lowered its magic number to 11 to clinch the first half playoff spot.
The Dash tries to win its first series in two weeks when the teams meet again on Saturday night. The game is a matchup of the league's top two pitchers in ERA, as RHP Nevin Griffith (4-1, 2.34) opposes LHP T.J. McFarland (6-1, 1.78) in a 7 p.m. start. Fans who can't make it out the ballpark can tune in online beginning at 6:45 at www.wsdash.com.
