Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - For the last three weeks, the Pelicans have made a habit of confounding opposing offenses behind a recently brilliant pitching staff. Friday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark, they used the same formula but got too much of their own medicine on the other side.
The Red Sox were held to their same offensive as their blowout loss series opener, but in game two of this four-game set in Salem, the home team found the antidote to Myrtle Beach's potent game one offense. Caleb Clay, William Latimer, and Kyle Fernandes combined to allow just one Pelicans run on five hits while not walking a man in a 2-1 Salem victory.
Friday night, the Pelicans took the game's first lead with an odd run in the second inning. With one gone, Samuel Sime extended his hitting streak to four games with a double over the head of center fielder Peter Hissey. Sime pulled up around second base content with two bags, but cutoff man Oscar Tejeda took the throw and did his best Chuck Knoblauch impression, launching an airmailed salvo into the Salem dugout for a two-base error that scored Sime and gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.
Myrtle Beach returned the favor an inning later, however. With two out, two on and starter Randall Delgado laboring, the right-hander induced what appeared to be an inning-ending groundball to second base. Instead, the hotshot grounder went off the glove of Pelicans second baseman Dan Nelson and into shallow right field, enabling Mitch Dening to score from second base to tie the score at one.
It took until to the seventh for the deadlock to snap. Delgado settled down after a shaky first three innings in which he matched his season high with three walks. In the seventh, trouble again struck with two outs. After Jon Hee single to open the inning, he advanced station-to-station on back-to-back outs; first a sacrifice Ryan Dent bunt, then a groundout by Mitch Dening. With just one out separating the Pelicans from another offensive chance to break the tie, Peter Hissey sent a shallow fly ball to center field that found the turf just beyond the outstretched glove of Myrtle Beach shortstop Ryan Barba. Dening scored easily on the play to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead and bring Delgado's (2-5) day to a close. The righty did strike out eight but was charged with both Sox runs, one earned, on five hits over six and two-thirds along with his season-high three walks. Friday night's game marked the fifth time in eight total clashes between these two teams this season that the Pelicans have scored first and lost.
Relievers Latimer (3-3) and Fernandes (S, 5) made the lead stand by combining to blank the Pelicans from the seventh through the ninth. Clay departed after six innings with a no-decision after having allowed Myrtle Beach's one unearned run on four hits. The three Red Sox arms struck out seven without issuing a free pass.
The Pelicans will try to achieve at least a series split Saturday night when they send 19-year-old phenom Julio Teheran to the hill for his fourth Carolina League start. In his third, on Monday at Frederick, the righty struck out a franchise record-matching 14 Frederick Keys. He'll be opposed by right-hander Alex Wilson (2-1, 3.16) with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. The Pelicans return to Myrtle Beach on Monday, June 7 for the first of three against the Winston-Salem Dash. The first game of the series will be another installment of Kids Eat Free Monday in which all kids ages 12 and under receive a coupon for a free hot dog, chips, and a drink with the purchase of a game ticket.
