Norfolk Tides News Release
Ryan Doumit went 3-for-5 with two RBI, lifting the Indianapolis Indians to a 5-2 win over the Tides Thursday afternoon from Harbor Park.
Doumit's big afternoon helped the Indians sweep a four-game set from the Tides, as the 26-year-old finished the series hitting .471 (8-for-17) with a home run and nine RBI. Doumit doubled home a run in the first inning to put the Indians up 1-0, and extended the Tribe's lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring single in the 5th inning.
After Indy jumped out to the 1-0 lead, Norfolk tied the score in the bottom of the first inning as Jay Payton reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk, and came around to score on a double by Cesar Crespo.
Payton, playing in his second Major League rehab game with the Tides, finished 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
The Indians grabbed the lead on an RBI single by Luis Matos in the 4th inning, and extended it to 3-1 with Doumit's run-scoring single in the 5th. Indianapolis added two runs off of Paul Shuey in the 7th inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Russ Johnson and Yurendell de Caster.
Nonrfolk tallied the final run of the contest on a solo home run by catcher Eli Whiteside leading off the ninth inning. It was Whiteside's first home run of the season, and Norfolk's first long ball at Harbor Park.
J.R. House singled in the 6th inning for the Tides to extend his season-opening hit streak to 12 games.
Bryan Bullington (2-0) picked up the win for the Indians, allowing an unearned run on five hits in seven innings of work. The 26-year-old walked three and struck out two, lowering his ERA to 1.02.
Jim Johnson (0-1) took the loss for Norfolk, yielding three runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. The 23-year-old walked one and struck out six.
Next up for Norfolk is a six-game road trip to Louisville and Indianapolis, beginning Friday night from Slugger Field in Louisville. Southpaw Kurt Birkins (0-0, 0.00) is slated to make his first start of the year for the Tides against Bats' right-hander Homer Bailey (1-0, 1.74). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
