Indianapolis Indians News Release
NORFOLK, Va. -- Right-hander Bryan Bullington allowed just one unearned run and five hits over seven innings as Indianapolis rolled to a 5-2 victory and four-game series sweep of Norfolk Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.
The Indians improve to 9-3 on the season with a 5-1 road trip, while the Tides fall to 3-8 with the setback. The Tribe collected 27 runs, 42 hits and a .288 team BA in the four-game set.
At 9-3, Indianapolis is off to its best 12-game start since 2002. Thursday's win also gave the Indians their first four-game road series sweep since May 27-30, 2006.
C Ryan Doumit, who increased his International League-leading batting average to .459, paced the Tribe with a 3-for-5 effort and two RBI. CF Nyjer Morgan also collected three hits for the visitors.
The Indians struck first with a run in the opening frame when LF Rajai Davis scored on Doumit's one-out double. The Tides evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
Indianapolis stretched its lead to four by sending one runner plateward in the fourth, one in the fifth and a pair in the seventh. Norfolk would not score again until C Eli Whiteside hit a solo home run off LHP John Grabow (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) in the ninth.
Bullington's performance (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) lowered his ERA from 1.69 to 1.02 and improved his record to 2-0. Norfolk's RHP Jim Johnson (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) suffered the loss in his third start of 2007.
The Tides offense was led by LF Cesar Crespo, who went 2-for-3 and brought one run across the plate. Crespo was the Tribe's Most Valuable Player in 2005.
The Indians return to Victory Field on Friday at 7 p.m. for its second homestand of the season. Indianapolis LHP Shane Youman is scheduled to face Richmond RHP Buddy Carlyle in game one of a four-game series.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m. The first 4,000 fans will receive a 2007 Indians Team Photo courtesy of Sport Graphics.
